Laminated glass is two panes bonded to a tough interlayer. Hit it hard enough and it cracks, but the interlayer holds the fragments in place, so the opening stays closed and the glass stays out of the room. That is the whole mechanism, and it is why the same product does three unrelated jobs at once: debris resistance, break-in resistance and sound reduction.
We are not going to tell you central Indiana needs hurricane glazing. What it does get is severe hail, straight-line wind events that push debris horizontally, and spring storm lines that arrive with very little warning.
Where It Earns Its Cost Here
Hail-exposed elevations
West and south faces take the worst of an Indiana hail line, and a laminated unit survives strikes that shatter annealed glass.
Straight-line wind and derecho events
Wind-borne branches and yard debris travel horizontally in these systems. Laminated glass keeps the envelope closed.
Highway and arterial noise
The interlayer damps sound well. Openings facing I-69, 96th Street, 116th Street or the 37 corridor are the obvious candidates.
Ground-floor security
Laminated glass takes a long, loud time to get through, which is most of what deters a forced entry.

What a Spring Storm Line Actually Does
The damage pattern we get called about after an Indiana storm line is rarely a tree through a window. It is hail pitting and cracking on the west-facing glass, and small debris — branches, gravel from a roof, a neighbour's yard furniture — striking at speed. Annealed and tempered glass both fail completely under that; tempered simply fails into smaller pieces. Laminated glass cracks and stays in the frame, which is the difference between a repair and an open house in a rainstorm.
